Running the latest Bing on “not supported” devices

There’s a new version of Bing available here that supports speech input and turn-by-turn spoken directions. It even seems to have traffic avoidance. I’ve barely had a chance to play with it yet but I wanted to pass along a fix for the “Your device has been identified as not supported.” error you’ll get on any but the very latest phones.

Go to the Bing install directory, mine was “\Storage Card\Program Files\Bing”, and edit the file “Bing.config”. Find the entry “UseAppServerUpdates”. Change the value from “True” to “False”. Save the file.

That should do it. The application runs now and I don’t get the error anymore.

This was tested on an HTC Kaiser running some 6.5 ROM.

I’m not able to install latest Bing app at all on HTC Vogue (QVGA, WinMobile 6.1 stock Rom) — errors out due to “incompatibility.”
Any thoughts on a possible fix?

Many thanks justDave your Bing workaround for the new Bing that supports speech input and turn-by-turn spoken directions works perfectly.

I downloaded my cab from http://static.appserver.m.bing.net/binaries/winmo/v1/Bing.CAB

Then clicked on the link for “Download Bing for Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5 ”

My pocket pc is a LG INCITE with a cooked Dark Wolf 23554 Rom which upgraded it to Windows Mobile 6.5.3

The version of Bing I performed your work around on is 5.1.2010.5040.

Windows Marketplace also has this new app for free as well, but as of 5/21/10 it states to be version 6.2 I don’t know if there is a difference or not.

    Thanks again.
